We thought it would be nice to have a selection of easy reads on hand for you to peruse while you relax at the Dome House. So first to be added to the library is Waiheke. An island and its people. Written by John Hawkesby a well known and long time local broadcaster who moved to the island in 2001 and beautifully photographed by Duncan Innes a freelance photographer who travels the world but calls Auckland home. Hawkesby goes into a bit of detail about what brought him to the island, after his career hit a bump in the road. A chance holiday on the island to recuperate from a difficult time planted a seed for their move and it wasn't long before he and his wife find their perfect piece of paradise and set up home. He goes on to discuss the colour, quirkiness and idiosyncrasies of this island that attracts such a wide range of personalities.
The book is brought to life through the beautiful photography of both the scenery and magic spots on the island. Some of the characters that make up the islands colourful 8000 odd permanent residents are also captured with entertaining bios describing what brought them to this little piece of paradise.
By the time I had finished this read I was contemplating looking at real estate on the island! It completely sold me on the island life and I have been coming here for over 30 years. Such a great light read and a fun insight into what makes the island tick.
